About Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga (as taught by Yogi Bhajan) is known as the yoga of awareness, and its purpose is transformation ~ to recognise, refine and expand our awareness to our unlimited Self. It is considered the most comprehensive of yoga traditions, combining breathing techniques, meditation, mantra, and physical exercises known as ‘kriyas’.

It is a deeply spiritual and intentional practice, and its purpose is to activate the Kundalini energy, or 'shakti', which is understood as the ultimate life-force energy that begins at the base of the spine and/or perineum (aka "Root Chakra"). It is known as the source of our creative power, intuition and divine feminine or 'yin' energy that connects with our higher consciousness and divine masculine or 'yang' energy.

Hence, a Kundalini Yoga practice uses the physical body to move the life-force energy along our central channel (along the spinal cord), to (re)awaken your true enlivened state of being, your essentialness, your 'you-ness'.

The literal translation of the word "Kundalini" is "the curl of the lock of hair of the beloved." It is a metaphor that refers to the flow of energy and consciousness that exists within each of us and enables us to merge with or "yoke" the universal Self. Fusing the individual (micro) and universal (macro) consciousness creates the divine union called ‘yoga’.

Knowledge of this sacred science of Kundalini is said to pre-date the 15th Century BC, and was a technology veiled in secrecy, passed along verbally from master to chosen disciple, until Yogi Bhajan brought it to the West in the late 1960s.

The word Kriya means “Action”. Kundalini Kriyas are an orchestrated pattern of movements, sound, breath, ‘mudras’ (energetic ‘lock’ or seal), concentration and meditation that automatically guide the energies of the body and mind to a specific result or change of consciousness. They are always practiced and taught in a particular sequence and timing not only to maintain the integrity of the kriyas as they were originally taught, but also to safely facilitate the intended result or change.

Kundalini Yoga enables us to build resilience and sensitivity by creating a healthy energy flow and balance within the gross and subtle dimensions of the human body/mind/spirit. It enables the individual to go deep within and connect. Kundalini Kriyas actively support the nervous system and glandular system, and can also help us become aware of the true state of our own health, such as the mind, heart, spine, digestive system, liver etc.
