Understanding Trauma

What is Trauma?

At DIVE Healing®, we understand that trauma is not just about the events that happened — it’s about what happens inside of us as a result. Trauma is the lasting impact that distressing or life-threatening experiences have on our brain, body, nervous system, and spirit. It can affect how we think, feel, relate to others, and navigate the world around us.

Trauma is far more widespread than medical definitions often recognise. One of its core impacts is that experiences from the past can become imprinted on our nervous system, subtly or powerfully influencing how we respond to life in the present. In fact, many emotional, psychological, and even physical struggles trace back to earlier life experiences. When triggered, these unresolved wounds can set in motion patterns of behaviour, thought, and feeling that limit our well-being and growth.

While trauma can happen at any stage of life, it can be particularly disruptive when it occurs during childhood. The developing brain and body adapt to an environment of chronic stress or threat — shaping our emotional apparatus and coping responses that may persist into adulthood. Adults with early trauma often find themselves stuck in survival responses, even in situations that are objectively safe.

This is because emotions such as fear, stress, guilt, anger, shame, compulsive behaviours, and self-punishment can become deeply embedded in the nervous system, immune system, and cellular memory. When life triggers a fearful association later on, those old programmed responses resurface — automatic, unconscious, and rigid.

Healing from trauma requires more than managing symptoms — it asks us to gently rewire and reawaken our natural capacity for safety, resilience, and self-realisation.

What is PTSD?

Signs and symptoms of PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a specific condition that can develop following one or more distressing events — such as serious accidents, physical or sexual assault, war-related trauma, torture, or natural disasters.

It’s common to experience shock, fear, and emotional disturbance in the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event. For many, these symptoms ease with time and support. However, when distress persists beyond a month and begins to interfere with daily life, PTSD may be present.

There are four main areas where symptoms often show up:

Re-living the traumatic event
Unwanted memories, flashbacks, or vivid nightmares; intense emotional or physical reactions to reminders of the event, such as sweating, heart palpitations, anxiety, or panic.

Avoidance
Avoiding thoughts, feelings, people, places, or activities connected to the trauma. Individuals may feel numb, detached, or emotionally shut down.

Negative changes in thoughts and feelings
Persistent fear, guilt, shame, anger, or emotional flatness. Beliefs such as “I’m bad” or “The world isn’t safe” may develop, leading to disconnection from others.

Hyperarousal
Difficulty sleeping, irritability, heightened startle response, difficulty concentrating, and a constant sense of being “on guard” for danger.
